Oglebay Park, also known as Oglebay Resort & Conference Center, is this awesome municipal park that covers 1,650 acres just outside Wheeling, West Virginia in Ohio County. Back in 1926, Earl W. Oglebay was generous enough to donate his estate, Waddington Farms, to Wheeling so folks could enjoy it for recreation. The park officially opened its doors in 1928 thanks to the Wheeling Park Commission.
The park made it onto the National Register of Historic Places way back in 1979. A bunch of the original buildings, like the Oglebay mansion and its greenhouse, are still standing and getting plenty of action. Some spots, like the carriage house, have been rebuilt to give off those original vibes. Nowadays, the Oglebay mansion is a cool museum run by the Oglebay Institute.
The park has everything you could want: stunning gardens and trails to stroll through, 54 comfy cottages, a massive 271-room lodge, 11 tennis courts for a game or two, a huge outdoor pool to relax in, plus both a nine-hole and an 18-hole championship golf course, along with a super fun little par-three course for some quick rounds.
Other popular park landmarks include the Good Zoo, the Anne Kuchinka Amphitheater, The Schrader Nature Center, a planetarium, a ski slope, Camp Russel, and Schenk Lake, which offers fishing, pedal-boating, and nightly fountain shows in season.
Annual events at the park are a blast, like Fort Henry Days, which is all about celebrating history with cool reenactments, fun crafts, and live music; the Ohio County Fair, where you can check out local farms, munch on tasty food, and hop on some fun rides with the family; the West Virginia Tennis Open, bringing in all the tennis lovers for some thrilling matches; and the Winter Festival of Lights, where stunning light displays turn the place into a winter wonderland, spreading holiday cheer and good vibes for everyone!
